Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a loaf pan.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: eggs, buttermilk, oil, and peppermint extract.
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
Fold in the chocolate chips gently.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
Bake in the preheated oven for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, sprinkle crushed candy canes on top for garnish.
